Greetings Comrades and Sisters,
At the beginning of November, Post 1719 was referred to Blanket America as a good organization to get some blankets into the hands of vets for Veteran's Day. We received 120 blankets and distributed some at the VA and the rest on the street in downtown Oklahoma City. Researching this organization, we saw that their goal was to distribute one million blankets across America with a goal of 13,000 for Oklahoma. We offered to help them get those 13,000 into the hands of needy Oklahomans, knowing that we could probably count on the state-wide network of VFW posts and auxiliaries!
Blanket America agreed and they sending those 13,000 blankets to Oklahoma. They are in-transit as I write this. The attached letter explains Blanket America in more detail and relates our role in this endeavor. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get the VFW name out there in your community and may help you with membership. The most important aspect is that the VFW is out there in the community and that we (and in this case with Blanket America) make a difference; ( did I mention our cost is zero)! In addition to the local PR, Blanket America will have two professional photographers/video producers on-site. Their role is to raise awareness of poverty, to document our efforts and use this state-wide endeavor as a prototype for their future distribution. Their work will be uploaded to social networks such as Facebook and You Tube and will be submitted to all traditional news organizations - VFW everywhere!.
As we cannot possibly know every worthwhile organization in Oklahoma, we need your help. We are looking for low income programs, child care centers in low income areas, shelters for homeless, shelters for abused women or men, programs with children involved, church groups helping the disadvantaged and the like. We are looking for those individuals in your community that make a difference and if someone has a story to share, we will make time to listen.
You know your community best. All you have to do is forward the organization or the area and a contact person if available. We will try and go to as many areas as we can. Your assistance, when we come to your location, would be appreciated but not mandatory (but as we stated earlier it is a great opportunity to promote the VFW and your post).
Distribution dates are from approximately 14-24 December. We will be starting in eastern Oklahoma and proceeding west with trips north and south as requested.
Be a difference and help some people. Thank you.
